The small intestine is made up of three parts: The duodenum which surrounds the top of the pancreas, the jejunum which folds up on itself vertically and the ileum which lies horizontally and is joined to the cæcum. The role of the small intestine is that of food assimilation.

After food is separated in the upper part of the digestive tract, the small intestine selectively and according to the needs of the body, re-absorbs carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. These various elements are necessary for the production of living substances.
